About

Polo in New Zealand may be half a world away for most players, but there’s something truly special about enjoying a few chukkas on a sunny summer afternoon when the majority of the polo world has shut up shop for winter.

Players who visit New Zealand have widely varying polo ambitions. Some seek a summer of Gap Year polo; others may be talented horsemen or women with great playing ambitions. Then there are the experienced players looking to improve their matchplay – and enjoy a pleasant summer break in the process.

But all polo players, whatever their goals, share one important thing: a true passion for the sport.

My name is Mark Harris and polo has been a huge part of my life. I have been lucky enough to play all over the world and represented New Zealand at international level for many years.

Today, I run the New Zealand Polo School from quiet countryside just 30 minutes from Christchurch City, the main international hub for New Zealand’s South Island.

The polo school and my coaching programme has developed over the last 15 years and it has been my genuine pleasure to meet polo players from all over the globe.

Playing polo in New Zealand is an experience you will never forget. My own international-size polo ground is considered one of the best playing surfaces in the country. The local polo community is active and strong, and, through the polo school, play for visitors at club level can easily be arranged.

Many school visitors comment on the sheer joy of playing a few friendly chukkas on the nearby beach.

The polo school caters for players of all ages and experience. It focuses on one-on-one coaching and provides polo ponies of the highest standard. I pride myself on the quality of my horses and they remain in demand all over the world.

The school offers accommodation to suit all tastes, ranging from a self-contained apartment in our modern family home to hotels or motels in the area. Most visiting players eat with the family and relish the relaxed environment.

I would link to thank you for visiting the polo school’s website. It explains my own polo journey and my coaching philosophy which I believe brings out the best in players.
